SAMPLE PAST PROJECTS Completed the BEA Project of the Savings by Design new construction incentive program of PG&E, SCE, SDG&E and SoCalGas from 1999/2007. Successfully completed the energy audit, modeling, and simple instruments monitoring tasks of the project leading EBA’s team. Among the building types he analyzed include shopping malls, convention centers, laboratory buildings of bio-tech companies, large hotels and casinos, central plants of large facilities with process loads, universities, offices and data centers, single and multi family residential homes as well as manufacturing sites. Completed the Small Commercial HVAC Systems project of the CEC/NBI that required measurement and monitoring of the HVAC systems, on-site energy audit and computer modeling. For CEC Energy Partnership program, developed energy efficiency study report for the City of National City, Civic Center building. The recommended ECM’s are determined based on an initial on-site audit of the building energy systems, building energy simulation and cost analysis of the preliminary list of ECM’s. For PG&E’s Commercial New Construction Evaluation Project of 1996 & 1998, Mr. Berhanu was responsible for leading the project team which conducted 126 site audits of commercial buildings of which he conducted over 45% of the sites. Performed the energy analysis and simulation of 76 sites. For SCE’s Design Tools for Skylighting project, developed a Doe-2 Model for daylighting analysis and analyzed various daylighting measure runs. For PG&E/CEC, Dollar Based Codes Project, performed parametric runs for Visual Doe-2 models of various building types and created excel macros to perform the economics runs. For Southern California Gas, New Construction Energy Efficiency Design Guidelines Project of commercial buildings, calculated savings estimates of various ECM’s. Employed the applicable T-24 and ASHRAE standards on the proto type buildings for various cities. For PG&E's study of the performance of geothermal heat pumps for commercial/residential buildings, and SMUD's residential geothermal heat pump project, Mr. Berhanu developed prototype computer models using the DOE-2.2 programs for various building types. For SDG&E, conducted modeling of nine U.S. Navy commercial buildings and for the Gemological Institute of America two buildings totaling over 220,000 SF. EBA has completed energy analyses of a 200,000 SF Kaiser Medical Office building for SMUD's New Construction Commercial Program. For SCE's New Construction Program, he conducted analyses involving a laboratory, office, auditorium and classroom at UC Irvine and buildings made of innovative insulated concrete technology for RASTRA House. For Arizona Public Service (APS), EBA Principal was involved in the prototype development of commercial and residential buildings for DSM evaluation using the DOE-2 program. Over 60 ECM's were evaluated in this project. For the Western Energy Management Company, EBA Principal was involved in the recommendation and analysis of ECM's. Responsibilities included the DOE-2 analysis and recommendation of ECM's for a large hospital, a five star hotel in Las Vegas and a courthouse. EBA managed and performed the engineering analysis for SMUD's Impact Evaluation of the New Construction Residential Program. The project required 40 on-site audits and 200 sidewalk surveys of residential buildings and the performance of DOE-2 simulations of all 240 buildings to calculate energy savings for ECM's.
Energy Audits: EBA has worked directly for utility companies in the collection of energy use information, in addition to working with consultant teams in collecting and analyzing energy use data as part of utility evaluation programs. In particular, Mr. Berhanu offers the following experience: Conducted over hundred of on-site audits for BEA Project of the Savings by Design new construction incentive program of PG&E, SCE, SDG&E and SoCalGas from 1999/2007 and currently working on the FY 2004/2005. Various commercial buildings, central plants and light manufacturing sites were surveyed in this project. EBA was responsible for leading the project team which conducted 126 site audits of commercial buildings of which he conducted over 50 of the sites audits for the evaluation of PG&E's 1996 and 1998 new construction programs. Audited the PG&E rebate savings program for commercial, industrial and agricultural sites. Evaluated all hand calculations and simulations performed to obtain the savings and made field visits to verify installation of the rebate measure. For San Diego Gas & Electric commercial buildings survey project, performed energy audits for various commercial buildings.
